Why Is GPS Distance Wrong on My Running Watch?

You run a route with a known, verified distance — a certified track, a road with marked mile markers — and your watch reports a noticeably different number. Or your splits jump erratically mid-run, especially downtown or under heavy tree cover. This isn't a broken GPS chip; it's a well-understood limitation of how satellite positioning works in exactly those environments.

How GPS Distance Is Actually Calculated

Your watch determines position by triangulating signals from multiple satellites, then records a coordinate "fix" every second or few seconds during your run. Total distance is calculated by connecting these fixes into a path and summing the segments. The accuracy of each individual fix depends heavily on a clear line of sight to the sky — anything that interferes with that signal degrades the fix, and those small errors compound across an entire run.

Multipath error is the biggest culprit in cities and forests. Signal doesn't always travel straight from satellite to watch — it can bounce off buildings, glass, or dense tree canopy before arriving, and the watch interprets that reflected, delayed signal as if you'd moved when you actually didn't. This is often called the "urban canyon" effect downtown, and the equivalent happens under heavy forest cover on trails, where satellite signal is scattered by branches and leaves rather than buildings.

Why Small Errors Turn Into Big Distance Gaps

Even a few meters of positional wobble at each individual fix point, which is normal and common even under good conditions, adds up differently depending on your route shape. On a winding path with tight switchbacks, an out-and-back section, or a repeated loop course, small zigzag errors between consecutive fixes compound over the same short stretch run multiple times, inflating total recorded distance compared to your actual, straighter path. A straight, open-sky route is far less affected by this than a technical or repetitive one, even at identical actual distances.

What Actually Improves Accuracy

Multi-constellation and dual-frequency GPS, available on higher-end watches, pulls position data from more satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) and uses more advanced signal processing, meaningfully reducing multipath error compared to older single-frequency chips — if your watch supports it, enabling it is worth doing.

Wait for a full GPS lock before starting your activity. Fixes recorded immediately after acquiring satellites tend to be less accurate than fixes recorded once the watch has had a few extra seconds to refine its position.

Establish your own baseline error under good conditions by running a certified track or a road with known mile markers in open sky. This tells you how much margin your specific watch has when conditions are ideal, which makes it easier to judge whether a bad reading on a technical route is expected error or something worse.

When It's Actually a Problem

No consumer GPS watch is perfectly accurate — typical published accuracy under good conditions is a small single-digit percentage of total distance, and that margin widens substantially in poor-sky-visibility environments. If your watch is significantly off even on a straight, open-sky route with a strong satellite lock, that points to a genuine hardware or firmware issue worth a factory reset or a manufacturer support check — but this is uncommon, and most "wrong distance" complaints come from route shape and environment, not a faulty device.

Some GPS distance error, especially downtown and under tree cover, is a fundamental limitation of satellite positioning, not a broken watch. Expect more disagreement on technical, urban, or wooded routes and treat the distance as a close estimate rather than a survey-grade measurement. Don't buy a "more accurate" watch to fix this unless you're consistently seeing large errors under genuinely open sky, since even premium GPS chips share the same underlying physics.
