You check your watch each morning and the resting heart rate reading jumps around — 52 one day, 61 the next — despite nothing about your routine feeling obviously different. This kind of day-to-day variation is normal and expected, and understanding how the number actually gets measured explains most of why it moves around as much as it does.

How Your Watch Actually Determines "Resting" Heart Rate

Most wearables don't take a single, deliberate resting-heart-rate reading. Instead, they continuously sample your heart rate throughout the day and night using an optical sensor, then algorithmically identify your lowest sustained heart rate over a given window — typically during sleep, when your body is most reliably at rest. What's more informative is your rolling average over one to two weeks, and whether that average is trending in a consistent direction over time, rather than any single morning's number in isolation.
