If you've ever been cold overnight despite a properly rated sleeping bag, the problem was almost certainly underneath you, not on top of you. Sleeping pad R-value is the most consequential backpacking spec that most buyers never look at. Here's what it actually means and how to choose.

What R-Value Measures

R-value measures thermal resistance — how well a material resists heat flowing through it. In a sleeping pad, that means how effectively it stops your body heat from being pulled into the cold ground.

Higher number = more insulation. The scale is roughly linear, so a pad with R-4 insulates about twice as well as one with R-2.

Since 2020, most reputable manufacturers test to a standardized method (ASTM F3340), which means R-values are now genuinely comparable between brands — a meaningful improvement over the era when every company used its own testing.
