You wake up feeling completely normal, but your watch or ring flashes a low recovery score and suggests taking it easy today. It's confusing when the number disagrees with how you actually feel — and understanding what's really being measured underneath that single score makes it much easier to judge when to trust it and when to trust yourself instead.

Recovery Score Is a Composite, Not a Direct Measurement

There's no single sensor that measures "recovery" the way a thermometer measures temperature. A recovery score is a composite index — an algorithm that combines several separately measured overnight metrics into one number, typically weighted and compared against your own personal baseline rather than a fixed population average. The exact formula and weighting differ between brands, which is part of why the same night's sleep can produce noticeably different scores on different devices.

The Metrics That Typically Feed the Score

Heart rate variability (HRV) — the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats — is usually the most heavily weighted input. Subjective feeling and these physiological metrics don't always move together, because they're capturing different things. You can feel mentally fresh while your nervous system shows measurable residual stress from a hard training session, heat, alcohol, or poor sleep quality your conscious mind doesn't register as clearly as your heart rate variability does overnight. The reverse also happens — a rough night's sleep by feel doesn't always show up as a dramatic HRV or RHR shift, especially if the disruption was brief.

Why Personal Baseline Matters More Than the Raw Number

Because HRV and RHR vary meaningfully between individuals for reasons unrelated to fitness or recovery (genetics, age, baseline fitness level), a recovery score is only meaningful relative to your own rolling baseline, not as an absolute number compared across people. A score of "70" means something different for two different users, which is why trend direction over weeks matters more than any single day's number, and why comparing your score to someone else's is not meaningful.
