Why Does My Watch Overestimate Calories Burned?

Your watch reports 600 calories burned for a walk that didn't feel especially strenuous, and if you've ever cross-checked that number against a more careful estimate — or against how much you'd actually need to eat to "earn back" that many calories — the gap can be large enough to seem obviously wrong. It usually is inflated, and the reason comes down to how the estimate is built, not a broken sensor.

What Your Watch Is Actually Calculating

A wearable doesn't directly measure energy expenditure — there's no sensor that measures calories the way a heart rate sensor measures pulse. Instead, it estimates calorie burn using a formula that combines your heart rate, movement data from the accelerometer, and personal profile data (age, sex, height, weight) run through a population-derived algorithm. It's a statistical estimate built on averages, applied to you individually — not a direct physiological measurement.

Total Calories Includes a Number You Didn't "Earn"

Most watches report total calorie burn for an activity, which includes your basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the calories your body burns just staying alive during that time window, regardless of activity — stacked on top of the calories actually attributable to the exercise itself. For a 30-minute walk, a meaningful portion of the "calories burned" figure would have been burned anyway just sitting on the couch; only the portion above your baseline BMR is actually attributable to the walk. Watches that don't clearly separate "active calories" from "total calories" in their display make burn totals look larger than the exercise itself accounts for.

Why Heart Rate-Based Estimates Run High

Heart rate is a reasonable proxy for effort during steady-state cardio like running, but it's a much weaker proxy for calorie burn during other activity types. Heart rate rises for reasons unrelated to energy expenditure — stress, heat, caffeine, dehydration, or simply an elevated resting rate that day — and the algorithm has no way to distinguish "elevated heart rate from real effort" versus "elevated heart rate from a hot day," so it attributes all of it to calorie burn.

Activities with a lot of upper-body or static effort are the least accurate. Strength training, resistance work, and incline walking with poles all produce significant real energy expenditure that doesn't show up proportionally in heart rate or wrist-accelerometer movement patterns, which sometimes causes underestimation — but the more common complaint is overestimation on movement-heavy but lower-effort activities, where the accelerometer registers a lot of motion (arm swing, wrist movement) that inflates the estimate beyond actual effort.

Why Individual Calibration Is Weak

The underlying formula was validated against population-average data, not your specific metabolism — actual metabolic efficiency varies meaningfully between individuals even at identical age, sex, height, and weight, due to factors like muscle mass, fitness level, and genetics that most consumer wearables don't account for at all. This means even a well-designed algorithm has a built-in margin of error before it even gets to your specific workout. How to Use the Number More Realistically

Treat the reported figure as a rough relative indicator — useful for comparing one of your workouts to another over time — rather than a precise, absolute number you should use for detailed calorie-in-calorie-out math. If you're using calorie burn estimates to inform eating decisions, published research generally suggests discounting consumer wearable estimates by a meaningful margin rather than treating them as exact, especially for total (not just active) calorie figures.
