Why Does One Earbud Die Faster Than the Other?

You glance at your earbuds' battery levels mid-day and one side reads 40% while the other is still sitting comfortably at 70%, despite both starting the day fully charged and getting equal use. This is a genuinely common pattern with true wireless earbuds, and in most cases it comes down to how the two earbuds talk to your phone — not a defect in the low battery one.
The Master/Slave Radio Architecture
Most true wireless (TWS) earbuds don't connect to your phone as two independent, equal devices. Instead, one earbud is designated the "primary" or "master" — it's the one that establishes the actual Bluetooth connection to your phone. It then relays the audio to the "secondary" earbud over a separate, shorter-range wireless link, often a lower-power protocol like Near-Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) or a secondary Bluetooth channel.
The primary earbud is doing meaningfully more radio work: maintaining the main Bluetooth link to your phone (including handling all connection handshakes, audio streaming, and any calls or voice assistant requests) and relaying to the other earbud. That extra radio activity draws more power, so the primary side typically drains faster over a listening session — often by a noticeable margin.
Some newer earbud models use a "true dual-master" design where both earbuds connect independently to the phone, which removes the relay overhead, but even in that design small differences in radio conditions (one ear facing away from your phone, hair or a hat partially blocking one side) can still cause one side to work harder and drain faster.
Other Contributing Factors
Manufacturing tolerance. Battery cells are never perfectly identical even from the same production batch — a few percent capacity variance between two cells is normal and expected. Over hundreds of charge cycles, this small initial difference compounds, and the side with slightly lower original capacity or slightly worse fit-and-seal quality falls behind faster.
Dirty or misaligned charging contacts. If one earbud isn't seating perfectly in its case slot, or its charging pins have a bit of oxidation, ear wax residue, or lint on them, that earbud may not be reaching a full charge every time it's docked — this shows up exactly like faster drain even though the real issue is incomplete charging.
Fit and seal differences. If one earbud doesn't seal as well in your ear canal (wrong tip size, ear shape asymmetry), you may unconsciously increase volume or rely on active noise cancellation more aggressively to compensate, and both use more power on that side.
What to Check
- Identify which earbud is your model's designated primary (check the manufacturer's app or manual) — expecting that one to drain faster is normal, not a problem.
- Wipe both sets of charging contacts, on the earbuds and inside the case, with a dry cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
- Make sure both earbuds seat and click fully into their case slots — a slightly misaligned earbud can silently fail to charge.
- Let the case fully charge both earbuds to 100% at least once and see if the imbalance appears immediately at the start of a session or builds up over hours of use — this helps distinguish a charging issue from a usage-drain issue.

When It's a Sign of Real Battery Degradation
A modest gap — the primary side finishing a few hours or 10–20 percentage points behind the secondary over a full day of use — is expected and not something to worry about. A large or steadily growing gap over months, especially if it eventually causes one earbud to die in under an hour while the other lasts several, points to genuine battery cell degradation on that side. Earbud batteries are small lithium cells that do lose capacity with charge cycles like any other rechargeable battery, and one side can simply degrade faster than the other. Most manufacturers will replace a single failing earbud (rather than the full set) within the warranty period, and some sell individual replacement earbuds afterward.
